Does Testosterone increase when supplementing creatine monohydrate?

  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen hormone synthesized in the body from testosterone. It is much more potent than testosterone. Creatine increases the rate of conversion of testosterone to DHT. This is supported by a study done in 2009 on 20 rugby players divided into 2 groups; the first supplemented with creatine and the other were the placebo. After 21 days, serum levels of testosterone were not elevated in both groups; however, the creatine group showed more DHT increase compared to the placebo group.1
  • Creatine plus beta-alanine supplementation increases blood testosterone levels. This is demonstrated by a study done in 2006 on football players during a 10-wk resistance training program. The participants were divided into 3 groups; the first supplemented with creatine plus beta-alanine, the second supplemented with creatine, and the third supplemented with placebo. Only the group supplemented with creatine plus beta-alanine showed increase in blood testosterone.2
